    • Minneord / Nekrolog: Obituary for James Francis Sprague Jr. On the morning of May 2, 2016, James Francis Sprague, Jr. lost his life in a car accident. James was born in Michigan City, Indiana and grew up in Long Beach. He spent his boyhood enjoying Lake Michigan and playing baseball with friends. He attended Long Beach Elementary and Barker Middle School. Jim spent one year at Elston High School in Michigan City and graduated Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia. From 1967-1971 Jim served in the Air Force in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where he met his first wife, Sharon Dianne Skrogstad. They moved to Bloomington in 1972. While Jim studied at IU, he started a wooden toy business with Sharon. Their son Jeremy was born in 1974. Jim was a founding member of By Hand Gallery, a Bloomington artist co-op. As Jim’s love of woodworking grew, he ventured into a career as a cabinetmaker and designed and built beautiful furniture and kitchens. In the early 90’s, Jim became a realtor with RE/MAX. In 1992, Jim met Deb Murzyn and a year later they married. Jim was a man who loved big. He knew how precious life is and lived each day to the fullest. He loved music and felt honored to be a part of the Bloomington music community and was a strong presence in it. He played weekly with fellow musicians at Player’s Pub and often hosted the Tuesday night Blues Jam. Jim was in three bands: O2R, Cliff and the Guardrails, and the Swingsmiths. Jim also loved sports and was an avid sports fan. He loved Mickey Mantle, the Yankees, the Cubs, and IU. Jim looked forward to the Cubs winning the World Series this year. He also renewed his joy for woodworking when he recently returned to making beautiful furniture. Jim loved his family and will be sorely missed. He is survived by his wife Debbie Murzyn, son Jeremy Sprague (Elizabeth), stepson Christopher Poolitsan (Allison), grandsons James and Michael Sprague, sister Virginia Winn, brother Charles Sprague, and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife Sharon Sprague, his father James Sprague, and his mother Norma Gunn. On Sunday, May 22 a celebration of Jim’s life will be held from 1:00-5:00 pm at Player’s Pub on 424 S. Walnut Street, Bloomington.

The crash occurred just before 9 a.m. Police say their preliminary investigation revealed a 2005 Hyundai sedan driven by Ryan M. Kimbrel, 31 of Mitchell was traveling northbound on State Road 37, approaching Tapp Road. Police say Kimbrel drove the Hyundai from the left lane into the right lane where vehicles were stopped for a red light. He sideswiped a stopped 2014 Toyota sedan. The Hyundai then continued northbound into the intersection against a red traffic light, colliding with a 2013 Toyota sedan that was travelling through the intersection to turn south onto S.R. 37. The driver of the 2013 Toyota , 69-year-old James F. Sprague Jr., was killed in the crash. Kimbrel was taken to IU Health Bloomington in unknown condition. The driver of the 2014 Toyota was not injured. The investigation is ongoing. UPDATE (July 10, 2019) — Ryan Kimbrel was sentenced to 10 years in the Department of Correction with 2 years suspended to probation. He pleaded guilty to OWI causing death with a Schedule I or II substance in the blood; other charges against him were dismissed as part of his plea agreement. His driver’s license is also suspended for 10 years.

    • Minneord / Nekrolog: Sharon D. Sprague Feb 22, 1949 - March 31, 1998. Sharon Dianne Skrogstad was born Feb. 22, 1949, the daughter of Howard and Mabel (Flom) Skrogstad in Grafton ND. She was raised and educated in the Milton, ND area. She graduated form Milton High School in 1967. She attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, graduating from there in 1971. Sharon married James Sprague, Jr., on May 22, 1971 in Grand Forks. They moved to Michigan City, IN and later to Bloomington, IN. She created the Peaceable Kingdom Toy Company, which made wooden and soft toys. She was on the founding committee of the Fourth Street Art Festival and a founding member of the By Hand Gallery, both in Bloomington, IN. In her later years she worked for the Monroe County Community Mental Health Center and the Bloomington Hospital as a drug and alcohol counselor. Sharon is survived by one son, Jeremy Sprague of Bloomington, her mother, Mabel Skrogstad, Grand Forks, ND, one brother Merlin (Jone) Skrogstad, Duncan, OK, two sisters Eunice (Marlyn) Duden, East Grand Forks, MN and Melva (Ellerd) Boe, West Fargo, ND. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Howard Skrogstad in 1989. A memorial service was held at Milton Lutheran Church on April 21, 1998. Pastor Alan Arneson officiated. Pastor Arneson is married to Sharon's niece, Lisa. Those providing music were Pastor Arneson, Melva's kids, and spouses and a family friend, Diane Fossum. After the service, time was spent at the church visiting with family and friends. Then the family went to the graveyard where Sharon had previously been buried and then to the farm where Sharon grew up. We shared a wonderful day together as a family sharing our sadness and fond memories.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today in Tollefson Funeral Home, Edinburg, and one hour before services in the church. Howard Skrogstad was born May 29, 1918, in East Alma Township of Cavalier County, N.D., the son of Hans and Marian Skrogstad. He grew up there and later married Mabel Flom Sept. 6, 1942, in Milton. They farmed near Milton until retiring in 1979. Survivors are his wife, son, Merlin, Duncan, Okla, daughters, Eupice, (Mrs. Marlyn) Duden, East Grand Forks, Melva (Mrs. Ellerd) Boe, West Fargo, N.D., Sharon (Mrs. James) Sprague, Elletsville, Ind.; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene (Mrs. Manley) Tollefson, Osnabrock, N.D., Hellen (Mrs. Joe) Widness, Grand Forks, Evelyn [Illegible]nson, Murdock, Minn., and brother, Melvin, Halstad, Minn. He was preceded in death by one sister and one granddaughter.

    • Minneord / Nekrolog: Mabel A. D. Skrogstad, age 86, of Grand Forks, ND, formerly of Milton, ND, passed away on Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at SCCI Hospital in Fargo, ND. Mabel A. D. Flom was born July 28, 1917 at the family farm in Walsh County, ND, the daughter of the late Herman and Anna (Gulbrandson) Flom. She grew up and was educated in Tiber Township, south of Milton, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Stephen's Lutheran Church of rural Milton. On September 6, 1942, she married Howard O. Skrogstad at the Milton Lutheran Church. They farmed in the Milton area until 1979 when they retired. In 1983, they moved into Milton. Howard died in 1989. In 1995, Mabel moved to Tufte Manor in Grand Forks to be closer to family. She was a member of the former St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, the former West Mountain Lutheran Church and a current member of the Milton Lutheran Church. Mabel was a church organist for many years and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed her time working with her husband and family on the farm, particularly taking care of the animals. She also was known for the many quilts that she made for family members and for the church and Bible Camp and for counted cross stitch and embroidery items. Even her time spent on dialysis was not wasted time as she continued to work at her stitching projects. She is survived by one son, Merlin (Jone) Skrogstad of Duncan, OK; two daughters: Eunice (Marlyn) Duden of Grand Forks, ND, Melva (Ellerd) Boe of West Fargo, ND; eight grandchildren: Rosie Dyke, Sandra Warner, Brenda Duden, Brian Duden, Lisa Arneson, Christi Brose, Ross Boe and Jeremy Sprague, nine great grandchildren; sister Clara (Orval) Myrvik of Park River, ND. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Sharon Sprague, granddaughter Lori Duden, one brother, two sisters and three half-brothers. Funeral Services will be Saturday, July 24, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. at the Milton Lutheran Church of Milton, ND. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at the West Mountain Cemetery, rural Milton, ND.
