• Beskrivelse av familie: Anders went to sea at an early age of 14 on a sailing ship and was treated badly by the skipper, as was the custom of the times. Later on, he became a ships' carpenter and once sailed around Cape Horn to South America. The trip took three months. After he stopped sailing, he took work in a shipyard in Tvedestrand. Later, he moved to Larvik and worked as a builder and cabinet maker. He also had a furniture shop and store. He built the big mission house in Larvik, that is still standing today. After moving to Christianna or Oslo, as it is called today, he expanded his building activity and had several men working for him. He build many big houses and even a Methodist Church. He also was interested in farming, and at one time he had two big farms with 20 horses and many cows, dogs and a pair of beautiful black horses and a carriage to drive with. Christiania, the capital of Norway, later known as Oslo, had been through a prosperous period. Building activities and activities and expansionn increased and a number of dwellings were added to the new picture of the city. Master builders (contractors) and bricklayers were in ?Short? those days. (Do they mean great demand or short supply?--"short"?) This prosperity lasted til the end of the 1900? and the turn of the century was highly celebrated with the hope and a prayer for a safe future.. THEN came the "crash"--the bankruptcies and unemployment! and the emigration to America. Dad (Anders) planned to build us a house at Korsvoll, so when the old pharmacy--SVANE-APOTEKET-- at the end of the 1890's was broken down, he boughtt 4 big plate glass windows from this pharmacy, it's enormous front door and the big stove (storeyed) -- approximgately 2.5 m. high. Then dad was declared bankrupt in fall 1902. Mam, dad, Gudrun and the other three of us (written by Asta Taraldsen), Torje, Else and Asta, had to move from Thomas Heftyesgate to a two-room apartment in Sarpsborggaten 1. Gudrun suffered the greatest loss since at the time she attended a private girls' school, Nissen Skole, but fortunately she was offered a free scholarship those two years with no charge of fees. She managed to pass the exams and got her junior high school certificate. Gudrun chose Bjolsen Skole and Tarald, 18 years old, went with dad as a carpenter. Bricklayer, Alfred Jansen, who married Ingeborg Taraldsen, stayed in Norway. But his (Alfred's) two brothers, Edvin, who married Anna Taraldsen and Karl Jansen went to America. Dad (Anders) settled his estate and got enough back to buy a log cabin at Sessvoldmoen in Ullensaker.
