Joseph W. Begala (March 4, 1906 – April 24, 1978) was an American football and collegiate wrestling coach. He served as the head football coach at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio from 1933 to 1934, compiling a record of 4–5–6. He also served as Kent State's wrestling coach, amassing a dual match record of 307–69–5. Begala died on April 24, 1978, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, Ohio.

KENT, Ohio (UPI) - Former Kent State University wrestling coach Joe Begala, who had the best record in collegiate wrestling history at ,812 for 42 seasons, died Robinson Monday at nearby Memorial Hospital. He was 72.
Begala, who lived in Kent, was a coach in six sports. He served as wrestling coach from 1929 when he came to Kent until his retirement in 1971, running up a record of 307-69-5. He also coached football, tennis, golf, cross-country and track.
From 1929 tp 1952 he was head trainer for all sports. His "wrestling teams-had seven undefeated seasons and he also had two undefeated teams in track and one in golf.
The coach of more than 200 champions, Begala was a member of the Ohio High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Helms Hall of Fame and the Ohio Kent from University Hall of Fame.
Born in Struthers, Ohio, March 4, 1906, he received his bachelor's degree from Ohio University, a second one from and a masters degree Ohio State University Begala was emeritus Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, having retired from teaching in 1972.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet, and sons John of Kent and Jergen of Atlanta, Ga |
