Washoe Hospital Osteopathic Row Echoes in Carson (Nevada State Journal, Reno, Nevada, 21 Feb 1935, Thu) Washoe Hospital Osteopathic Row Echoes in Carson
CARSON CITY, Feb. 20.--(UP)--.
Charges that the controversy at Washoe General hospital over the banning of osteopaths from practice at the hospital was due to an attempted monopoly by medical men were made before a senate committee today.
Dr. John P. Kilb, Reno osteopathic physician, made the assertion, during the "hearing on the bill of Senator H. W. Sawyer, Fallon. which would require examinations in five basic sciences of all persons seeking to practice any type of healing in the state, of Nevada.
Senator Sawyer defended his measure before the senate committee education, state library and public morals. Chairman Ryan announced the hearings would be continued.
Former Chief Justice J. A. Sanders opposed the measure on behalf of osteopaths.
The bill will do no good, he and said and would limit the activity of osteopaths. He denied there was any public demand for the law. The measure would require examinations in human anatomy, physiology, pathology, chemistry and hygiene.
"Examiners must have had thorough practical knowledge and experience in some form of healing practice," he remarked, opposing the provision to set up an impartial examining board of non-practitioners.
Dr. John P. Kilb, Reno osteopath, charged the bill was directed against his profession, and blamed medical men for the present disturbance the Washoe county hospital.
"The present trouble at the hospital," he charged, "can be traced to an attempted monopoly by medical men."
Dr. Sawyer, author of the bill, denied the charge.
"The situation exists because of the osteopaths' opposition to a progressive measure that is designed help them," he replied.
Describing the measure as "a most liberal law," Dr. Sawyer said its intent and purpose was to raise standards and prestige of the healing profession as a whole.
"Why there should be any opposition from the osteopaths," he demanded, "who are now in a discredited position and who would be benefitted most by the bill, I can't understand."
He said that all practitioners should have a fundamental knowledge of the mechanism they are dealing with, the human body. The five basic sciences, he maintained, would, merely require knowledge of the body. Similar basic science laws are in effect in seven states. |

Physician Sought By Officers - Dr. John Kilb Leaves Town When Officers Want to Quiz Him (Nevada State Journal (Reno, Nevada), 12th of January 1936) Physician Sought By Officers
Dr. John Kilb Leaves Town When Officers Want to Quiz Him
While a 17-year-old Carson City girl lay near death in a Reno hospital last night, a coast-wide search for Dr. John P. Kilb, Reno osteopathic Physician, was instigated by Sheriff Ray Root at the request of District Attorney Ernest S. Brown.
Kilb is wanted for questioning in regard to the condition of the girl who was brought to the local hospital in a critical condition following an operation performed elsewhere.
Warrant today
Brown stated shortly after midnight that a warrant would be issued early today for the arrest of Kilb.
Dr. Kilb yesterday afternoon ordered a local transfer company to remove the furnishings of his office in the First national bank building "as quickly as possible" and place them in storage.
At 5 15 p.m. he checked out at the hotel where he had been residing, leaving no definite word as to where he was headed. He drove away from the hotel in the large sedan which he has driven for several months.
Brother missing
When authorities sought his brother, Dr. George Kilb, for questioning, they found that he had left his residence at 253 South Virginia street. His family, including his two children, was also absent from the residence.
Since Wednesday Dr. John Kilb has been informing friends that he intended leaving Reno for a few months and intended doing research at the Mayo brothers clinic in the east. His office attendant stated yesterday afternoon that the doctor was going on a six weeks' vacation. In many instances he informed friends that he was "going east".
May be Southbound
The search for Dr. John Kilb was begun shortly before 7 p.m. and at 2 a.m. no trace had been found, although teletype messages had been sent to principle western cities.
Whether the brothers had left the city and traveled together was purely a matter of supposition last night. Opinions that the men, each driving his own car, had gone south, were expressed early this morning. |

Dr. Kilb is held in L.A. after Reno charge (Reno Gazette-Journal, Reno, Nevada, 13 Jan 1936, Mon) Dr. Kilb is held L. A. after Reno charge
Dr. John P. Kilb. Reno osteopath, is under arrest in Los Angeles, charged with performing an illegal operation on a seventeen-year-old Carson girl. Dr. George Kilb, brother of the accused man, also was held for questioning, but no charge has been placed against him yet.
The girl was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon in a serious condition, and after she had made a statement, the complaint was issued by District Attorney. E. S. Brown, who in company with Sheriff Ray Root and Justice of the Peace James Sullivan, has gone to Los Angeles to bring Kilb back to Reno.
Saturday night, it is charged, the Kilb brothers moved their household and office goods into a warehouse and left for Southern California by automobile. Yesterday morning they were taken into custody by the Los Angeles police, and Dr. John P. Kilb has waived extradition, the officers here were notified.
The girl's condition this morning was "fairly well - only fairly well," her physician said.
John P. Kilb came to Reno nine years ago, and was joined by his brother five years ago. George Kilb's naturalization hearing was in scheduled for last week, but was continued at his request. |

Officers returm with Dr. Kilb from L.A. (Reno Gazette-Journal, Reno, Nevada, 15 Jan 1936, Wed) Officers return with Dr. Kilb from L. A.
Immediately after he had arrived in Reno this morning in charge of county officers, Dr. John P. Kilb was arraigned before the justice of the peace on a charge of performing an illegal operation, and is now at liberty on cash bail of $500.
Kilb allegedly fled from Reno Saturday night after a seventeen-year-old Carson girl was taken to the hospital in a serious condition. The osteopath was arrested in Los Angeles the following day and his brother, Dr. George Kilb, also was held for questioning, but no charge was placed against him: The girl is still in a serious condition.
The officers say that the Kilb brothers hastily closed their offices and homes in Reno and stored their property, then left the city by automobile Saturday night. John P. Kilb waived extradition proceedings, and was returned to Reno by Sheriff Ray Root, District Attorney E. S. Brown and Justice of the Peace J. E. Sullivan.
On the return trip from Los Angeles, the officers and their prisoner had to make a wide detour as the southern passes over the mountains were blocked by the storm and they had to return by way of the coast route and over the Dormer summit. They arrived, in Reno at five o'clock this morning after a twenty-two hour trip. |

Dr. Kilb Charges Dismissed After Hearing (Reno Gazette-Journal, Reno, Nevada, 15 Feb 1936, Sat) Dr. Kilb charges dismissed after hearing
Holding that there was not sufficient evidence to justify a district court trial, Justice of the Peace Sullivan yesterday dismissed a felony charge against Dr. John P. Kilb, Reno osteopath, who had been accused of performing an illegal operation. The preliminary hearing was held behind closed doors in the justice court yesterday afternoon, and only three witnesses for the state appeared.
Dr. Kilb was alleged to have performed the operation on a Carson girl who later was taken to a Reno hospital. Dr. W. A. Shaw testified he treated the 'girl at the hospital, and asserted that Dr. Kilb had asked him:
"Help me get out of this situation." Dr. A. L. Stadtherr, who performed an emergency operation on the girl, described her condition, but said he didn't know that Dr. Kilb was responsible.
In answer to a question by H. W. Edwards, defense attorney, Dr. Stadtherr said there were no hard feelings between him and Dr. Kilb, adding that they had been friendly. Dr. Shaw said he had not known Dr. Kilb before he was called to treat the girl, and in answer to Edwards' question, denied he had resigned from the Washoe general hospital staff several years ago because of Dr. Kilb's legislative activities.
Sheriff Ray Root, who brought Dr. Kilb from Los Angeles to Reno for trial, said the defendant had talked with him on the homeward trip, regarding the girl and had mentioned the money he received for the case. Making a statement to the court, Dr. Kilb said the girl came to him in December, and that he refused to perform the operation. A few days later, he said, she returned, and at that time she was in a serious condition. Several times he advised the girl to go to a hospital, he said, and added that he was not allowed to practice in St. Mary's hospital.
After the girl went to the hospital, Dr. Kilb said, he met Dr. Shaw, who told him: "I've got you now and I've got you good." Kilb added that Dr. Stadtherr had been friendly with him.
The defendant also said he had been planning to go on a vacation for several weeks, and that he left after the girl went to the hospital. He denied he had left Reno because of the affair, declaring that "it was a coincidence."
At the conclusion of the hearing, Sullivan dismissed the charge and returned Dr. Kilb's $500 bond, saying that there was not sufficient evidence to bind the defendant over for trial in the district court.
Sullivan then remarked that "the court and the district attorney have been put on the spot," as several witnesses who had promised to testify for the state failed to appear, and that both the county and Dr. Kilb had been put to considerable expense as a result of the affair.
The girl involved in the case had been called as a witness, but Dr. Stadtherr said she was unable to appear. |
