Olof William Moline (1888-1946) - Family History notes Family History
As told to me by Harlan Anderson from several family histories.
Olof Wilhelm Moline (Bill Moline) did not have the funds available for passage and set himself up in the United States. His sister and brother-in-law (Mr. & Mrs. Gust Anderson) sent him the money to come to America. He left Attmar, Sweden on May 21, 1907 aboard the Vessel SS Baltic and arrived in New York on May 31st 1907. (Correction: He first went to the United Kingdom and left Liverpool on May 31st 1907, arriving in New York on June 9th 1907).
To repay them and get himself started he worked in Cedar River, Mich. at a sawmill from June 12th, 1907 until April 1909. As handed down, he was not happy because his brother-in-law more or less tried to run his life as his brother-in-law saw fit.
In April 1909, as soon as his dept to his brother in law was paid, he came to Minneapolis and on Nov. 16, 1912 he married Christine Emilia Larson. The farm economy during World War One boomed. Bill Moline and Christine with high hopes decided to move from Minneapolis and made arrangements to purchase Christine's childhood home from her brother Gust Larson, who in turn moved to Gonvick, Mn. They moved to the farm on May 1st, 1917. Because of the optimistic farm economy, they mortgaged the farm to the hilt so as to maximize their yield from the land in which they decided to call home.
Prosperity on the farm was not to last for long. As a precursor to the great depression, the bottom fell out of the farm economy (in the early 1920s). Bill and Christine lost the farm due to financial difficulties, only to regain it at a later date. In this union were born six children. One daughter, Edith, came down with T.B., which at the time modern medicine could be of little help. On Nov. 23, 1935, Edith was taken to a T.B. sanitarium by hearse due to the lack of an ambulance. Sadly, she died the next day, Nov. 24, 1935. Christine contracted T.B. and passed away at the sanitarium on Aug. 3, 1938.
By Feb. 1943, Bill Moline left the farm and moved back to Minneapolis.
Unhappily, unfortunately he turned to alcohol for relief. He died April 4, 1946 at 7:00 AM at Minneapolis General Hospital due to kidney failure caused by acute alcoholism. |
