    In Memoriam

Each of us have our own memories of Arnold Folkvard, for to each of us he was a full person, a friend who made himself available generously and without stint.

Part of the tribute to any man is the record of his participation in the common life. For us he was, first of all, President of the Third District of the Sons of Norway, most of whose 8,000 members will feel the loss of a personal friend. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Carteret, New Jersey, where he found religious strength for his personal life and by his participation witnessed to the reality of his faith. The prayers he made at many of the functions of the Sons of Norway revealed the depth of his religious convictions. For more than three decades he was employed by Foster Wheeler Co., a further indication of the stability of his character. He served in the armed forces of our country for three years in the Second World War.

A man is also revealed by the quality of his family life. In his relations with his wife Agnes, and his sons Richard and Kenneth, he showed himself to be a loving and gentle man. They will be sustained in their loss by their memories of moments known only to them but made visible to all of us when we saw them together.

Our friend also revealed himself in his thoughtful and eloquent speeches. Although his formal education ended with High School, he never ceased to barn and to share what he learned in the clarity of his speeches which were always so well constructed and so clearly spoken.

Arnold Folkvard, a Brooklyn born son of Norway was first a member of Little Norway No. 430 which he joined in 1951. In twenty years he rose in the ranks of our order and is known by many people in many places. All who know him will be able honestly to say of him the words put by Shakespeare into the mouth of Antony as a tribute to Brutus: "His life was gentle, and the elements, So mix'd in him, that Nature might stant up, And say to all the world, 'This was a man'!"
