BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — The 20-year-old son of a Ferris State College dean was in custody today after the young man's accounting professor was gunned down in his classroom in front of 30 students.

Thomas D. Kakonis was arrested in the Wednesday shooting of Robert Brauer, police said. Kakonis, one of Brauer's students, was jailed and hospitalized under guard. A Mecosta County Sheriff's deputy said Kakonis was in shock. Kakonis faces an open charge of murder, said George VanKula, assistant Mecosta County prosecutor.

Students in Brauer's classroom said Kakonis walked in about 3:30 p.m. A student shouted a warning to the 34-year-old professor, who turned around just as Brauer's assailant fired several shots from close range with a 9mm handgun.

"When he turned around, he just looked up and the guy (Kakonis) was standing there with the gun already," said Tim Hans, one of the students in the room.
Brauer "bent over and said 'Oh, my God' and tried to fall out of the way under a desk" after the first shot was fired, Hans said.
Most of the students either ducked under desks or fled the classroom, Hans added.
-The professor was wounded by four, or possibly five, gunshots to the chest, said Everett Stevens, Mecosta County medical examiner.

An unidentified student said that Brauer had given an earlier class in which Kakonis was enrolled. Brauer gave that class a "dressing down" for poor performance on a test given Tuesday, the student reported.

Kakonis — who was enrolled in a four-year accounting program at Ferris — was subdued by two students and taken in custody by campus police, said college spokeswoman Patricia Coyle.

Kakonis' father, Thomas E. Kakonis, is an associate dean of Ferris' School of General Education, Ms. Coyle said.
"I just thought it was all fake until the gun went off and everybody just started jumping around," said Jeff Musser, a student who sat near the front of the room. "I just lay down on the floor under the table tryirig to hide."

"A student apparently thought he saw a gun in a bag or a briefcase and notified an assistant dean who then notified campus police," said college spokesman Jack McNamara. Authorities rushed to the classroom, but not in time to stop the shooting. Brauer was taken to a Mecosta County General Hospital where he was dead on arrival, a college spokesman said.

Brauer was an associate professor in the School of Business and had been at the college since the fall of 1976, Ms. Coyle said. His wife Katherine is a secretary in the business school's office above Brauer's classroom and she was in her upstairs office at the time of the shooting, authorities reported. The couple, married in August 1978, had no children, Ms. Coyle said. Ferris State has about 10,000 students.

Robert Brauer was buried at a Big Rapids cemetery Saturday, three days after the popular 34-year-old professor was gunned down as he taught an accounting class at Ferris State College.
At least 200 people — his friends, students and fellow faculty members —attended Brauer's funeral earlier in the day.

Earlier, the college announced that a Robert J. Brauer Memorial Scholarship Fund was being established at Ferris State in honor of the slain professor.
In Grand Rapids, meanwhile, the student accused of killing Brauer has begun speaking, and is apparently out of the near catatonic state he was in when he was arrested, a psychiatrist said Saturday.

Thomas D. Kakonis on Friday spoke his first words since Wednesday's slaying, said the doctor treating the 20-year-old sophomore.
"He basically has started to respond," said Dr. Jack Cam executive director at Forest View Psychiatric Hospital. "The response is still limited: now it's primarily verbal. It would be accurate to say he is out of the catatonic state, but he is still somewhat withdrawn."

Carr said Kakonis also began eating and drinking Friday. He first began communicating early Friday through written messages, but Carr would not reveal anything his patient had said or written.

Several people, including the judge who arraigned Kakonis, had described the student — the son of an associated dean at Ferris — as near catatonic since Brauer was shot four times with an automatic pistol as 30 shocked students looked on.

Kakonis was jailed after the shooting, but later was taken to Mecosta County General Hospital. After his hospital bedside arraignment on an open murder charge, he was transferred from Big Rapids to the Grand Rapids psychiatric facility 50 miles to the south.

At a preliminary hearing after the arraignment, he was found incompetent to stand trial. Kakonis is to remain at the hospital, guarded by a Mecosta County sheriff's deputy, until psychological examinations are completed.

"We can pretty well establish within a week a diagnosis that will allow us to treat him, but the issue of responsibility (for the shooting) won't come up until after we have a psychological examination." Carr said.
Police said they still are unsure of the motive for Brauer's slaying. But authorities said Brauer informed Kakonis a day earlier that he received a failing grade of 52 percent on an accounting examination.
