Two of their sons, August and Carl, spent their life and raised their families in Clinton Township until they both retired in Hinckley. He raised full blooded Hereford cattle and was an extensive feeder. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 728 and the Modern Woodman Camp No. 1572 both located in Waterman. The history of his family is completed later on in this chapter. Christian Baie's 6th child, August C., operated the homestead when his father retired. He later purchased the homestead of 160 acres of land and here he raised his family of six children. When A. C. Baie retired, his youngest son Clarence was very well qualified to take over the homestead. Later at the death of the mother, Clarence bought the homestead. He has been a very successful farmer and for years had a large dairy herd. In 1969 Clarence built a beautiful home in Waterman, retired and his only son Clare is operating the farm. • Beskrivelse i Litteratur: William Baie, a prosperous and influential farmer and stockman of Deer Creek township, near Adrian, is one of the highly respected, "self- made" men of Bates county. Mr. Baie is a native of Illinois. He was born in 1860 in DeKalb county, a son of Christian, Jr. and Minnie Baie. Christian Baie, Jr. was a son of Christian Baie, Sr., who was born in Germany and came to America when he was a young man, eighteen years of age, and settled in Kane county, Illinois. The father of William Baie, Christian Baie, Jr., was a successful and well-to-do agriculturist of DeKalb county, Illinois, owner of more than six hundred acres of land in DeKalb county. He died in 1907 and the widowed mother still makes her home in Illinois. To Christian, Jr. and Minnie Baie were born eleven children, all of whom have been reared to maturity and are now living: Henry, Adrian, Missouri; William, the subject of this review; Herman, Hinckley, Illinois; Mrs. Lena Marsh, Hinckley, Illinois; August, Waterman, Illinois; Mrs. Amelia Troeger, Hinckley, Illinois; Louis, Hinckley, Illinois; Mrs. Minnie Remsneider, Hinckley, Illinois; Mrs. Ida Walgrin, who resides in Pierce township, DeKalb county, Illinois; Carl, Waterman, Illinois; and Mrs. Ada Remsneider, Hinckley, Illinois. Mrs. Minnie Baie died February 15, 1918. In 1887, William Baie came from Illinois to Missouri and settled on a tract of land located near Adrian, a farm comprising two hundred acres, to which he has constantly added until at one time he was owner of three hundred seventy-three acres of choice land in Bates county, but he has recently sold eighty-three acres of his place to his son, Roy. Mr. Baie began life in Missouri under very discouraging conditions, being in debt and having ill-fortune in raising crops for the first few years. He had a very hard time to get a start in the new Western home, but by unflagging industry, perseverance, and tenacious endeavor, Mr. Baie has prospered and is now the owner of one of the attractive country places in his township. He has remodeled the residence, has built a large barn and several smaller barns, and has added implement sheds and other necessary farm buildings on his place and is now well equipped to handle large herds of stock and amounts of grain and hay. Mr. Baie keeps a nice herd of Shorthorn cattle and forty head of Poland China hogs. This past season, of 1917, he harvested two thousand bushels of oats and more than one hundred tons of hay and in addition had fifty- seven acres of the farm in corn, which yielded an average of forty bushels to the acre. He is a most progressive farmer and is an advocate of crop rotation and the constant use of the manure spreader. In former years, William Baie operated a steam thresher and corn sheller for many years in this vicinity and was very successful in this line of work. William Baie and Carrie Ridelspeger, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ridelspeger, were united in marriage in 1884 in Illinois. To this union were born five children: Mrs. Jennie Troeger, Hinckley, Illinois; Frank, San Simon, Arizona; Mrs. Cora Temme, deceased; Mrs. Ida Black, Kansas City, Missouri; and Roy, Adrian, Missouri. The mother died in 1894. Mr. Baie remarried, his second wife being Ida George, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William George, of DeKalb county, Illinois. William Baie and Ida George were united in marriage in 1899 and to them were born two children: Elizabeth and Sadie, both of whom reside at home with their father. Their mother, Ida (George) Baie died September 23, 1915 and Mr. Baie and his two daughters reside alone at the old homestead. Politically, William Baie is affiliated with the Democratic party. He takes a keen interest in public and political affairs and has held several offices of honor and trust in his township. Mr. Baie has served his township as school director ever since he came to Bates county thirty-one years ago and he has been president of the school board and of the township board. He has been a member of the town board of Adrian for five years and was justice -of the peace of Deer Creek township for five years. He is a worthy and highly valued member of the German Lutheran church and has been a deacon and the church treasurer for many years. William Baie is numbered among the enterprising and public-spirited citizens of Bates county.

    • Kort Biografi: DeKalb County, Illinois, USA; A. C. Baie A large percentage of the residents of Clinton township have had their nativity in Germany or are descendants from German ancestry. Such is the case with A. C. Baie who is now carrying on general farming in Clinton township. He was born in this township, April 10, 1865 but his parents were natives of Germany, whence they came to the United States in 1848, first locating at Sandwich, Illinois. The father began work as a farm hand by the month and after he had gained a little ready money in this way, he rented land which he continued to cultivate for several years. When his business ability and enterprise had brought him still more capital, he purchased a farm in Clinton township on section 13, where his son, A. C. Baie, now resides. The father at the present time is living retired at Hinckley and both he and his wife have passed the age of seventy-five years. They are highly esteemed people who, during the long years of their residence in De Kalb county, have proven their worth and thrift and enjoy the respect of all with whom they come in contact. A. C. Baie was sixth in order of birth in a family of thirteen children and in his youth his time and labor were largely given to farm work, while in the district schools he pursued his education. He has never sought other occupation than that to which he was reared and, as the years have passed, he has prospered. He is now owner of the old family homestead farm which comprises one hundred and sixty acres of land on section 13, Clinton township. Here he has made many modern improvements and everything about the place is indicative of his careful supervision and skill. In 1887 Mr. Baie was married to Miss Minnie Nehlhorn, who was born in Germany, June 17, 1869. Her parents were also natives of that country and there her father died. The mother afterward came to the United States in 1883, settling at Hinckley, Illinois. Her death occurred in 1904. She was the mother of ten children. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Baie has been blessed with an interesting family of three daughters and two sons: Elma May, born May 11, 1888; Everett Ray, born January 15, 1890; Ethel M., born February 18, 1896; Marvin C, born May 6, 1903; and Esther Roselle, born February 7, 1906. Mr. Baie gives his political support to the democracy and is recognized as one of the strong and able defenders of its principles in this locality. He was road commissioner for eleven years and was school director for six years. He and his wife are members of the Evangelical church at Hinckley, are worthy people and, as the years have gone by, have accumulated enough to buy the farm upon which they have lived since their marriage. That De Kalb county is a favorite place of residence is indicated by the fact that so many of her native sons have continued to live within her borders. enjoying the advantages here afforded and improving the business opportunities.

    • Kort Biografi: DeKalb County, Illinois, USA; Carl Baie Carl Bale, a practical and progressive farmer of Clinton township, who is also engaged in the raising of full blooded Hereford cattle, was born in this township. May 25, 1874. He is a son of Christian Baie, who was a native of Germany and came to the United States in 1848. Mention is made of him on another page of this work The boyhood days of our subject were quickly passed on the old family homestead. He obtained his education in the common schools and was reared to the work of the farm, early becoming familiar with the duties of field and meadow, so that he was well qualified to carry on farming on his own account when he married and started out in life for himself. That he has prospered as the years have gone by is shown by the fact that he is now the owner of one hundred and sixtyeight acres of land and he operates two hundred and eight acres on sections 13 and 24. He raises full blooded Hereford cattle and has been quite an extensive feeder. In fact his stock-raising interests are one of the most important branches of his business and contribute largely to his annual income. Mr. Baie was married in 1896 to Miss Hattie George, whose birth occurred in Northville township, La Salle county, Illinois, November 15, 1875. Her parents were natives of Germany and came to the United States in 1858. The father was a farmer by occupation and both he and his wife are still living. He has retired, however, from business cares and now makes his home in Somonauk, Illinois. • Minneord / Nekrolog: 1 Mai 1998
    • Minneord / Nekrolog: 1 Mai 1998; John Baie Insisted on serving the public with principle Contra Costa Times (Walnut Creek, CA) - Friday, May 1, 1998 John Baie would be the first to admit that as a politician, he wasn't much of a success. In fact, he was quite proud of his political failures, viewing them as proof that he did what he thought was right, not what he thought would get him elected. John, who served 16 years on the board of directors for Mt. Diablo Hospital and made unsuccessful bids for the Concord City Council, didn't care much for politicians. He saw them as men and women tied to causes they may not have personally supported but needed to ensure their political livelihood. While they lived lives of quiet desperation, John's life was one of dogged determination. He made decisions based on what he thought was right and what he believed his neighbors and constituents wanted. He never backed down. It didn't make him a popular man on the hospital board. It didn't make him an easy man to get along with. But it made him a man at peace with his actions. John never regretted any of his choices in life, says his stepson, Michael Irigaray. When John was a kid, he dreamed of joining the Army and seeing the world, maybe even saving it. When he was barely 16, he stole his older brother's birth certificate and enlisted. Although he hadn't finished high school, John was very bright. He read all the books and took all the tests, Michael says, and by the time he was 18, he had risen to the rank of sergeant. "He often talked about how he was just a pimply faced kid giving orders to men who were several years older than him," Michael says. When the United States entered World War II, John was posted to the Pacific, where he earned a Bronze Star. Eventually, he worked in personnel and procurement. He stayed on with the Army after the war and served in Korea and Vietnam. He retired in 1967 after 28 years. John, who had earned his high school equivalency diploma in the Army, went onto college, earning a master's degree in business administration. He then was hired as an assistant administrator at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York. A few years later, the sunshine and water lured him to the Bay Area, where he became assistant administrator at Mt. Diablo Hospital and also won a seat on the board of directors. It wasn't always a pleasant relationship. In 1973, he resigned his job, saying later that because of a conflict between him and the administrator, he'd agree to step down in return for favorable job recommendations. When those references never materialized, John sued the hospital for breach of contract. During the trial, the hospital made allegations of misconduct against John, who failed to persuade a jury he'd been harmed. John later filed a slander suit against the hospital, saying officials had damaged his reputation. All the while, John remained on the board and repeatedly won re-election. He sometimes was the only voice of opposition, but it would be wrong to peg him as a simple naysayer. If it was something he believed was good for the hospital and the community, he voted for it. And if it wasn't, he voted against. It didn't matter who was behind the issue friend or foe, he voted his heart. "He was always doing right for the little man," Michael says. "He didn't take the road that was easiest to travel, that's for sure. He'd go the way he thought was right for everybody." About 10 years ago, John was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. When his time for re-election came, he stepped aside, deciding he didn't have the strength to do the kind of job the voters expected from him. He remained interested in the hospital, though. In recent years, he added his voice to others who opposed the merger of Mt. Diablo and John Muir medical centers. "He was very proud to be a member of that board and to fight for what was right," Michael says. "He never regretted a day." Joan Morris writes story obituaries.
