• Selvbiografi: Fra skrubben til stuert Del I: Om tiden før jeg gikk på Oslo Kokk og Stuertskole av Nils Einar Samsonsen Hvordan jeg havna der? Det vet jeg ikke helt; det bare ble sånn. Den første steinen ble vel lagt allerede i barndommen. Far var sønn av en sjømann og 49 år gammel da jeg ble født. Han kunne ha vært min farfar ... Noen av de beste minnene fra jeg var barn, er bryggeturene med far. Han var gammel nok til å huske den tiden byens havn strakte seg fra Akers mek og Pipervika til Bjørvika (der Operaen ligger i dag), videre til Sørenga, Bispevika, Grønlia og Kongshavn. Også Sjursøyas historie kunne han fortelle. Ingen Tilfeldighet Farfar, som fremdeles fremstår som litt av en gåte, seilte på norske og amerikanske skip, og han var også en del av det som i dag kalles «Norwegian steam». Norske sjøfolk som seilte på amerikanske seilbåter, kuttere og yachter. Nordmenn var best på seil, og de ble godt betalt. På morssiden var onkler og grandonkler fiskere og sjøfolk, så at jeg etter hvert fant min arbeidsplass på havet var ingen tilfeldighet. Jeg gikk på Ruseløkka skole. I friminuttene kunne vi høre lydene fra havna og Akers mek. Spesielt klinkingen. Har du hørt den en gang, så glemmer du det ikke. Skipsfarten var på den tiden en del av norsk virkelighet. Den første ordentlige sommerjobben jeg hadde, var som anretningshjelp på Vestbanens jernbanerestaurant, drevet av Norsk Spisevognselskap (flott navn, og selvfølgelig avgått ved døden for lenge siden). Jeg var i skrubben og på spisevogn som «kelnergutt» som det het, og min 18-årsdag ble feiret som kelner på Vestfoldbanen. Sommeren etter jobbet jeg på Hvalstrand Bad og Restaurant som kelner. Det var en regnfull sommer, jobbet mest ute, så mye penger i kassen ble det ikke. Men derimot tur til sjøs. Det var relativt strenge regler for å få reise ut.
